New Uses for Mesh Wash Bags

By Trisha

One of my favorite organizing solutions is coming up with new uses for items I already own. During one of my de-clutter sessions, I came across several mesh wash bags in my laundry room cabinet that had gone unused for some time. It was time to toss them out or find a new use for them. Being the penny-pinching mom that I am, I came up with several new uses for these soft and washable bags.

Click here to read about my new uses for mesh bags over at SC Johnson.

What I Experienced At Nutrilite

24/7 Moms was invited to attend an exclusive event to learn all about Amway's Nutrilite vitamins. I (Lori) went on the trip along with Amanda from Kevin and Amanda , Emily from Busy Mommy , and Jenny from Picky Palate  I am back and ready to tell you all about my trip to both the Nutrilite Center for Optimal Health in Buena Park, California and to Trout Lake Farm in Trout Lake Washington.

I am always interested in learning more when it comes to fitness, nutrition, and overall health – but even I held some reservations when I heard the words Nutrilite and Amway.  Yes – you have all heard the stories.  I learned a lot and found it to be true when they told me “This isn't your parents' Amway”.  They weren't there to recruit me, or sell me their product, but to teach me about achieving my own optimal health.  Optimal health compels you to choose every day to be your best – by selecting the right foods and supplements, engaging in exercise and rest, and by incorporating healthy habits and balance in everything you do. Love that!

The two day trip started early in the morning – we met at 6:30 in the hotel lobby and took off for the Nurtilite Health Institute Center for Optimal Health.  I did this sans coffee and breakfast since we were told to fast starting at 8pm the evening before.  Let me tell ya – this girl was missing her coffee BIG TIME!  We went straight to the health assessment which included blood pressure, resting heart rate, strength, flexibility, bone density, blood work, and more.  Then I had to swab my cheek for DNA – so CSI - for the Weight Management genetic test.  Our genes influence our tendency to gain or lose weight.  Some people lose weight best going low carb (40%), some by going low fat (40%), and the rest by balancing healthy carbs/fat.  Apparently, there is a six-fold difference in weight loss on low carb or low fat if you have the genotype match.  WOW!  Of course exercise is also a component and this test will tell me if I will lose better on a high intesnisty or lower intensity style workout.  There are three other genetic tests they did that will tell me if I am geneticlly predisposed to heart attack, how I metabolise B-vitamin, and my suseptability to osteoperosis.  I should find out all my results in about another week – so excited to hear back!!  Once we were done they fed us an amazing breakfast full of color!  Why is the color so important?

We learned all about the phytonutrients that are found in fruits and vegetables – and how they block free radicals.  By eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables – of all colors – you are getting more kinds of phytonutrients for broader antioxidant protection.  You don't just need 7+ servings of fruits and vegetables – you need different COLORS of fruits and vegetables!

Whew – that was a lot to take in so we were off for a much needed lunch break with professional football MVP and Nutrilite spokesperson Kurt Warner.  It was very relaxed as we ate great food and chatted about our families, hometowns – oh who are we kidding – we ladies wanted to know all about Kurt's stint on Dancing With the Stars :)

The next day, we were once again up early – with coffee :) - for our flight from California to the beautiful Pacific Northwest!  We flew to Portland, OR on one of Amway's private jets.  Walking straight from the car, to the terminal, to the plane with no lines or security hassles was fabulous.  Breakfast on board was a delicious breakfast burrito and colorful fruit bowl – beats the heck out of a bag of pretzels!  I felt so spoiled and am now ruined for flying commercial!  My hubby is a commercial pilot and was SO jealous about this part of my trip!

Next was our drive up to Trout Lake Farm in Washington.  Trout Lake Farm is the largest certified organic herb farm in North America.  Their primary crops are Blueberry, Echinacea, Oregano, Peppermint, Nettle, Valarian, White Kidney Bean, Dandelion, and more!
I can tell you – I am from the PNW – but I was still in awe of the beautiful fields, flowers and mountains!

The echinacea was in full bloom and gorgeous - behind the echinacea is the beautiful Mt Adams.
One of the best parts of the day was when we were set loose on the 14 varieties of blueberries for some taste testing.  They were so yummy and it was hard to pick a favorite!

Now, the best part for our readers?  Nutrilite will be sponsoring a giveaway here on 24/7 Moms – check back soon to find out what it is!

Date Night Fun Ideas

With the kids heading back to school and our home getting back to schedules and routines it's time for my Husband and I to get back to our weekly date nights.  Date nights don't have to be fancy and expensive whether you take a walk, go eat dessert or have a romantic dinner at a restaurant the goal is to spend time together.

Date nights just don't happen at least in our busy house - if we don't plan they don't happen.  I suggest you grab your calendar and decide which night works for both you and your husband to have a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly date night and begin marking your calendar for the next several months or entire school year. ( Summers are harder for us to plan ahead due to traveling).

Now you might be saying but Trisha I need some new fresh and creative ideas in planning our date nights.  Fear no more I found a great idea from Shauna over at My Mix Of Six that she created for their monthly  date nights. She put together 12 Date nights all planned and paid for ready for a monthly adventure and surprise to her husband.  You will love this idea.  Click here for the details of how she created her date night packets.

Need more ideas? Here is an even BIGGER list of ideas to help get you started on Date Nights that  Shauna had posted over at Simply Said -
  • Theater tickets. You don’t have to pay the big money, colleges and high schools have amazing productions as well.
  • Free summer concerts in the park mixed with a Subway gift card
  • Dinner and the movies
  • Temple trip. Just copy your recommend or put in a picture of the temple to show him where you’re going.
  • A favorite fancy restaurant
  • Morning hike followed by breakfast out
  • Frisbee golf at the park with a coupon for dessert
  • Country dancing or any other dancing for that matter
  • Stargazing by a campfire
  • Home spa with a massage and smoothies
  • Walk through an art museum
  • Bike ride with picnic
  • One of each of your favorites. Steve likes sushi – I like chick flicks, so a night of both.
  • Cards or a favorite game in the park
  • Tennis or racquet ball
  • Bowling
  • Laser tag
  • Night out at the library (Steve LOVES to read and I like magazines. It’s a quiet night BUT we are together.)
  • There obviously can be FREE dates. It’s the time spent together, rather than the money spent.

School Paperwork Storage and Organization

In just a few weeks these piles will begin to reappear in our homes - you remember  those things our children pulled out of their backpacks sometimes it was daily other times they arrived home in what they call weekly folders and created mounds in our homes.  Yes, I'm talking about school papers.  We all have great intentions of keeping control of them and taming the school paper piles but it seems to be an endless job that quickly gets out of control and with 13 years of schooling for each child that is a lot of paper piles to sort and keep track of.

How can we begin the school year off ready to control the piles before they begin?

My answer is the School File box:

I began a file box for each child and placed 13 hanging files inside of it to hold each years of school papers we choose to keep - report cards, art, reports they had written etc. I used file folders in each hanging file to divide and file things according to various categories based on what I saved that year. You can purchase simple card board file boxes for fancy decorative ones.

Once you have your file box ready to go you can easily purge the papers that arrive home of what you will and will not file away as keepsakes.

I recently came across this same idea being used over at iHeart Organizing and she created a coversheet for each section that you can personalize with that years school photo and other details.  Click here to get your free Cover sheet printables.

iHeart Organizing also created labels fro each grade to use on the file folders.  Click here to get File labels.

Time to get organized and head out to purchase a file box for each child, a box of Hanging files ( 13 for each child) and a  box of files and get ready to simplify your children's school papers

MOM Tip: Free Homework Helper Videos

Are you feeling lost when it comes to helping your kids wit their homework?  I recently had a mom friend share with me about this FREE website she found that has over 2400 FREE how to educational videos. The Khan Academy.

Their library of videos covers K-12 math, science topics such as biology, chemistry, and physics, and even reaches into the humanities with play lists on finance and history. Each video is a digestible chunk, approximately 10 minutes long, and especially purposed for viewing on the computer.

Students can make use of our extensive video library, practice exercises, and assessments from any computer with access to the web.

Coaches, parents, and teachers have unprecedented visibility into what their students are learning and doing on the Khan Academy.

Every time you work on a problem or watch a video, the Khan Academy remembers what you've learned and where you're spending your time. We keep all of this data private but expose powerful statistics to each user and their coaches. You get at-a-glance information about everything you've been learning and whether or not you've been hitting your goals.

You can drill all the way down from a bird's-eye view of your profile into each and every exercise problem that you've ever worked on. You'll see real, hard data about your increasing mastery of math.

The Khan Academy is an organization on a mission. They are a  not-for-profit organization with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere.

WIN - Go Green Lunch Box

Almost three years ago, Kim Castner founded Go Green Lunch Box simply out of frustration.  She was a stay-at-home mom packing two lunches everyday for her elementary school kids.   She was appalled at the amount of waste generated by the packaging of single-serve items (sandwiches, juices, snacks, desserts, etc.). All of that – plastic baggies/wrap/cups, paper cartons/bags, cellophane bags – eventually winds up in our landfills. Upon reading a statistic about a typical American child generating 67 pounds of lunch packaging waste each school year, she knew I had to make some changes. Hence, Go Green Lunch Box!

Go Green Lunch Box is a three-part product. It consists of 1) an outer case made of fun, trendy fabrics for both girls and boys, 2) an inner food container with one attached lid that provides an airtight seal for all five sections, and 3) a stainless water bottle.  One of the favorite feature of the lunch box is the bag’s mounted, erasable white board, to write messages to children.

WIN: 24/7 MOMS and Go Green Lunch Box are giving away one lunch box of winners choice.

A Blessing Party For Back To School

It has become a tradition - Thanks to Valerie our official celebration editor here at 24/7 MOMS. At the end of each Summer Valerie hosts a Back To School Blessing party for the moms in our mom group and their children.

Prior to the party Valerie asks each mom to decide on a scripture verse for each of her children as their yearly verse that will be framed for each child to then be able to place on their dressers, bathroom counters or desks to remind them of the verse their mom selected and is praying over for them as they go off to school each day.

During the party we eat appetizers and have fun chatting then we gather all the kids around a cake  that has one candle in it for the blessing celebration - teach child steps up to the cake and is asked how they would like us to pray for them  for the upcoming school year, we then light the candle let each child blow it out on their turn, pray and bless them and present them with their framed scripture verse for the year.

What a great way to kick off the school year to pray for our kids, give them their own scripture verse to remind them of God's love and how special they are to him.

This is a simple celebration with each mom bringing an appetizer to share and then serve cake after the blessing celebration.

Twizzlers Road Trip Comes To An End - last stop Spokane Washington - WIN Twizzlers

It was a bitter sweet day - bitter that today was our last day on our Twizzlers Landmark Summer road trip and sweet that we had one more day of family fun.  I began my morning packing up all of our belongings while dad took the two youngest boys back over to Triple play and Raptor Reef to get in the last of water sliding, laser tagging and video games before piling into the Twizzlers mobile to begin our return road trip home.

We said our good-byes to The Holiday Inn express in Hayden Idaho definitely a must return place for our family.  The complimentary breakfast, spacious rooms, Triple Play and Raptor Reef were just four of the highlights of staying here in Hayden Idaho.  If you are headed to Idaho anytime soon click here to book you room and discover more about this family friendly hotel that the Novotny's give an A+ to.

On the road again in our Twizzlers mobile as we headed towards Spokane wit our first stop at Whitworth University where our oldest daughter will be attending this fall- we called ahead and asked if we could take a peek at her assigned dorm room and let her younger siblings see where she will be staying while away from home.  The sun was shinning and  Whitworth University campus looked like a beautiful park setting even I was ready to move-in.  Her dorm room has been freshly painted and feels roomy enough for she and her roommate.  However Nate our 9 year old  says when he goes to college he is going to live with us still because there was noting exciting to him about those dorm rooms and to him they don't seem big enough. Just wait till he is eighteen and gets that independent attitude, he will change his mind.

Next stop was the Spokane River Front Park home of the 1975 World Expo. This 100 acre park located in downtown Spokane along the river is stunning with its beautiful landscaping and full of more family fun then one can have in an afternoon visit.  We purchased day passes for endless amusement park rides and enjoyed them over and over again. Caleb our 11 year old rode the dragon coaster at least nine times and Nate was insistent on riding the Ferris wheel alone, see that independent attitude is already beginning. We enjoyed soft serve ice cream cones as our afternoon snack and appreciated the inexpensive snack bar prices.  Due to our long road trip ahead today  we had limited time  and were not able to experience the many other fun things to do  such as the iMax theatre, mini golf, sky ride , tour train and so much more Click here to get a full list of all that Spokane River Front Park has to offer. We look forward to return visits this year while visiting our daughter at Whitworh University.

As we headed out of town we took one last stop for dinner at the famous Dick's Hamburgers for burgers, fries and milkshakes to fill our tummy's before we hit the road for our 5 hour drive home. Dick's is an outside dinning establishment with a simple yet inexpensive menu.  Nate will tell you the burgers are so good he had to eat two of them - don't worry these are not over sized burgers so two seemed adequate for a growing boy who also is not a french fry eater. It was a perfect last stop to end our road trip of fun.

As we loaded back in the Twizzlers Landmark Summer mobile we were once again stopped and questioned about the amazing Twizzlers on wheels - we have had fun meeting and chatting to so many Twizzlers addicts during our trip and joke that if we wore Twizzlers shirts everyday and carried bags of Twizzlers candy we would be attacked all day long.

Another day of fun came to a close with our drive home and back in our own beds for a good night of sleep.

When we woke up on Saturday it was back to reality of an early football game for Nate so we snuck in one more mini road trip  and chauffeured him to his game Twizzlers style once again creating curiosity  of Twizzlers addicts.  Back home the neighborhood gang insisted on a picture
No No Don't Take my Twizzlers Mobile
with the Twizzlers mobile before It drove away for good.

M&M Cookies Confetti Style

When I am asked what my favorite cookie is I will respond with an M&M cookie.  Since my childhood I have loved baking and eating M& M cookies fresh or frozen I will eat them till the last one is gone just ask my kids.

The other day I came across a new version of an M&M cookie that I can't wait to try out - The M&M  cookie from Munchkin Munchies Click here for her complete recipe and how to create M&M confetti cookies.

TIP: If you have an M& M cookie recipe you already love I thin you could just change the method of adding your M&M's - rather then adding them in whole, crush them and create your own version of the Confetti M&M cookie.
